Our cattle are raised on grass, forage, browse, hay, non GMO soybean hulls, apple cider vinegar, free choice mineral and salt*. We use a rotational grazing system, and we supplement with soybean hulls to provide added energy to get our calves through the weaning process, to condition our show cattle, to provide additional energy to cattle that have lost condition, and to help finish our market animals.
|
Our cattle are not fed grain, as grain has been shown to alter the fatty acid and CLA profile in beef, whereas soybean hulls have been shown to provide additional energy without significantly altering the fatty acid and CLA profile. We use antibiotics only for therapeutic reasons, and we do not use hormones to improve performance. In addition, we do our best to provide a stress-free environment for the cattle, including our preference for on farm slaughter, which eliminates the stress of transport and the processing facility.
Our beef animals are at least 50% Highland steers, heifers and bulls. Animals are slaughtered between 18 and 36 months of age, except bulls whose maximum age is 24 months.
WHAT IS THE COST?
Our beef prices for 2022 are $3.50 per lb. of hanging weight for a whole animal, $3.75 per lb. for a ½ animal, and $4.00 per lb. for a ¼ animal. The cost of on farm slaughter is $100 to $150 per whole animal, and proportionally less if you are buying a half or quarter. We will bill you after slaughter is complete and the hanging weight is known. Typically hanging weights for our animals is between 500 and 700 pounds, so 125 to 175 pounds per quarter.
We will arrange to have your beef processed at The Hungry Farmer Meat Company in North Branch, Minnesota or Lake Haven Meats in Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota. We will share your contact information with them and you will work with them to determine your preferences for cuts. Their fee is based on hanging weight and amount of meat ground. This fee is payable directly to the processor when you pick up your beef. Expect the processing to take about two weeks.
Thanks for considering Climbing Stump Farm.
* On occasion our cattle are fed apples, turnips, kale and other garden produce in small amounts.
